Sky Niesen Smith, MSW, LICSW


Sky is an Assistant Professor at MSU-Mankato. She received an undergraduate degree in social work from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a masters in social work from Aurora University. She is currently in the doctoral program at St. Thomas/ St. Kate’s School of Social Work. Sky has years of experience working with children, youth, and families in a variety of systems. She has been a forensic interviewer of children and vulnerable adults in the context of child abuse and neglect reports. She has also had years of experience providing individual and group psychotherapy for patients and caregivers as a Clinical Director of a rural cancer wellness center. In addition, Sky has experience practicing social work at Mayo Clinic and Rochester Public Schools in Rochester, Minnesota. Her private practice includes program development consultation and social work licensing supervision. Sky’s research interest is in the area of rural psychosocial oncology, with a specific interest in distress experiences of Native American oncology patients.
