Academic Biography
Dennis Waskul is a Professor of Sociology and MSU Distinguished Faculty Scholar. He is author of Ghostly Encounters: The Hauntings of Everyday Life (Temple University Press 2016), Self-Games and Body Play: Personhood in Online Chat and Cybersex (Peter Lang 2003), co-author of The Senses in Self, Culture, and Society: A Sociology of the Senses (Routledge 2011), editor of net.seXXX: Readings on Sex, Pornography, and the Internet (Peter Lang 2004), and co-editor of The Supernatural in History, Society, and Culture (Temple University Press 2018), Popular Culture as Everyday Life (Routledge 2016), and Body/Embodiment: Symbolic Interaction and the Sociology of the Body (Ashgate 2006). His research is mainly in areas of symbolic interaction, sociology of the body, sociology of the senses, sexualities, sociology of the supernatural, and computer-mediated communications. Dennis has served as both Vice-President and President of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction, Production Editor for the journal Symbolic Interaction, and on the Editorial Board for Sexualities, Qualitative Sociology, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, and The Sociological Quarterly.
