History and Social Studies Summer Workshops
Over the summer, history and social studies students attended teacher workshops across the country.
Emma Clayton (Social Studies & History) and Zoe Suski (History) and Sydney Holland (Social Studies & History) attended the Belfer Conference at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. This is a three-day conference on how to teach about the Holocaust in the 7-12 grade setting. This is the second time in three years that Minnesota State Mankato has sent students to this conference.
Sam Gavin (Social Studies & History) attended the Colonial Williamsburg Teachers' Institute for a week this summer. He stayed on site and was able to learn about Colonial America from some of the leading experts in this field. After sending Minnesota State Mankato students out to this program for the past three years, Colonial Williamsburg has now set up a specific scholarship just for a college student from Minnesota to attend each year.
Madison Morrissey (Social Studies & History) was the first Minnesota State University Student to attend a three-day event at the LBJ Center Teachers' Workshop, which focused on "Why Women Organize."
All three of the workshops were free for our students to attend and in each situation they were the only university student(s) in the nation to be allowed to participate. We are very happy to say that we've only heard very positive reports about the group we sent out again this summer and that Minnesota State Mankato is welcomed to send more students to these events in the future.
