Admission to the Major

Requirements for Admission

Although you can declare a major at any time, in order to graduate with a psychology degree, you must also be admitted to the major.  When you decide to major in psychology, you are required to meet the following criteria before you can be admitted to the major and take 300-400 level classes:

  1. Obtain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 (this has been changed to 2.70 in the 2015-2016 bulletin)
  2. Earn 32 semester credits

If you meet these requirements but do not have 300-400 level permissions, email psychology@mnsu.edu and include your Tech ID.

Please contact your Psychology advisor or the Advising Center in Armstrong Hall 114 if you have questions or concerns about meeting these requirements.

Once admitted to the major, you are required to take core courses in Learning & Cognition, Personality/Social, Biological, and Developmental.  A psychology major requires 40 major credits which includes required courses and electives.  This structure ensures that you will receive a solid understanding of the foundational areas of psychology.

Minnesota State Mankato is a University where you can stand out. You will find comprehensive support services, a wide variety of majors to explore and opportunities to excel in and out of the classroom.
