THE TRUMAN & RETA WOOD

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

WHO MAY APPLY:Students who have Political Science as their 1 st major and 90 semester hours completed by the end of Spring semester 2008 with a high GPA and a record of community service.

WHY APPLY: The maximum allocation for the 2008-2009 Wood Scholarship is $10,000 and the maximum for the individual Scholarship is $5000. The selection committee will determine the number and the amount of the Scholarship within those limits. The Scholarship(s) will enable a student(s) to focus on their education, community involvement, and civic activities rather than on working. The financial support should provide a student(s) with nearly sufficient funds to cover one year of tuition.

WHERE DID THE SCHOLARSHIP BEGIN: Truman Wood is a past Minnesota State University, Mankato Professor in the Political Science/Law Enforcement Department. His personal interest in students has touched the lives of many students who have made major impacts on the Mankato area, Minnesota, the United States and even around the world. His caring and concerned manner has encouraged students to be proud of whom they are, where they come from, and to make the communities in which they live better places for all of us. These scholarship(s) will allow students, just like you, to continue on with the tradition. Although academic excellence is important, leadership and community service are also strongly emphasized and are affirmed by these scholarship(s).

Reta Wood taught elementary school classes in District #77 for 25 years. She also made a strong impact on her students. Many of those young people have gone on to distinguished careers, following her example, and contributing to civic life as she did. Reta continues to receive letters and cards from former students thanking her for the difference she made in their lives. The role model Reta provides is evident in her involvement in church, charities, and community activities at the present time.

If you have been involved in your church, community, local clubs or organizations or in other ways that have made an impact on the lives of others and your community and you have an interest in continuing to do so, you should apply.
