Winston W. Benson Memorial Scholarship

The Winston W. Benson Memorial Scholarship endowment fund is accepting applications for its annual scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a student seeking a graduate degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato in the fields of either political science or public administration and who is planning on entering the public service upon graduation. The scholarship is in the amount of $3000.00 and is intended to help pay for the students’ tuition and other educational expenses.

The student must meet all of the admission requirements of the department of political science and law enforcement graduate programs and must also meet the admission requirements of the Minnesota State University, Mankato, College of Graduate Studies and Research. The department admissions committee will require that students seeking this scholarship carry an excellent undergraduate grade-point-average, and have exhibited an interest in pursuing a career in the public service. It is not required that the student hold a bachelor’s degree in political science or public administration.

Dr. Winston W. Benson, during his over 40 years of service to Minnesota State University, Mankato, served as founding chairperson of the department of political science and was the long-term Dean of College of Graduate Studies at the university. His contributions to the university and the larger Minnesota community are long lasting and are celebrated through this memorial scholarship.

Applicants must, along with the usual application forms for admission to the department graduate programs and the College Graduate Studies and Research, submit letters of recommendation from at least two undergraduate instructors who can attest to the students’ ability to do superior academic work at the graduate student level. In addition, the applicant must submit a letter explaining why he/she would want to devote a professional career to public service.
