The deadlines of applications for History Department 2007-2008 Student Research Grants in extended to February 11, 2008.

The reception celebrating the creation of the William E. Lass Student Research and Writing Endowment will be Friday, February 1, 2008 from 11:00am to 1:00pm in CSU 101. The William E. Lass Student Research and Writing Endowment honors a man who worked tirelessly to improve students' research and writing skills. Professor Lass was instrumental in developing the History Graduate Program. He was a prolific researcher and writer, authoring seven books, at least 38 articles and book chapters and 120 book reviews. Professor Lass focused his research on the history of Minnesota, steamboating along the Missouri River, and the drawing of the boundary line between Canada and the United States. He served on the faculty from 1960 to 2002 and was Department Chair from 1973 to 1980.

The History Panel at Career Day will be Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 9:00am to 10:00am in CSU 201.

At the History Department Graduate Forum on October 2, 2007,  Tracey Hammell and Ladonna Mielke presented the papers that they would later deliver at the Northern Great Plains History Conference.  The forum was designed to give graduate students the opportunity to practice presenting their conference papers and to get feedback from faculty members.

Faculty Announce History 495 Senior Seminar Topics. To allow students to plan ahead, the Department announces the following History 495 Senior Seminar topics. In the Spring of 2007, Dr. Handke will offer a seminar on "Roman and Medieval Law." In the Fall of 2007, Dr. Corley will offer a seminar on "Growing Up: Childhood, Youth, and Education in Early Modern Europe, 1400-1800." In the Spring of 2008, Dr. Lahlum will offer a seminar on "History of the Northern Prairies and Northern Plains, 1850-1920."

Dr. Larry Witherell was a joint winner of the Parliamentary History Essay Prize for his article, "Sir Henry Page Croft and the Conservative Backbench Campaign for Empire, 1902-1932," Parliamentary History 25.3 (2006): 357-381. Dr. Witherell teaches British and Modern European history at Minnesota State.

Dr. Kathleen Gorman recently published Boy Soldier of the Confederacy: The Memoirs of Johnnie Wickersham (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 2006). For more information about the new book, please visit the Southern Illinois University Press website. Dr. Gorman teaches nineteenth-century United States history, particularly the Civil War era, at Minnesota State, Mankato. She is on sabbatical for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Dr. Lori Ann Lahlum recently received the Herbert S. Schell Award for the best article published in South Dakota History in 2005 for "'Everything was changed and looked strange': Norwegian Women in South Dakota" vol. 35, no. 3 (Fall 2005): 189-216. Dr. Lahlum teaches the history of the American West and Women's History at Minnesota State.

The Regional History Day competition will be held in the Centennial Student Union on Thursday, March 22nd, 2007.

The Phi Alpha Theta Honors Convocation will be held in the Centennial Student Union on Sunday, April 22nd, 2007.

The Undergraduate Research Conference will be held in the Centennial Student Union on Monday and Tuesday, April 23rd and 24th, 2007.
