Our learning before the trip will help students get the most out of the guided tours and independent explorations.Join the study-tour by paying a $500 deposit to MSU's Cashier Office by the end of November 2012. When you pay your deposit, choose a Political Science or Art course on the enrollment form. Your professor will then enter permission for you to register.Courses will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays (3:30 - 4:45 pm) until spring break. Tuesdays the Political Science and Art classes will usually meet separately to focus on special academic content. The Art and Political Science groups will join together Wednesdays for common study and tour preparation. All courses are for 3 credits. There are no prerequisites.
All courses are available for Honors Program Contracts.
You will study the broad sweep of German history and questions of German political identity, gain a basic understanding of the current German political system and learn about German culture and customs. The three courses (201, 410, 510) will meet together but with slightly different requirements. No prior coursework in political science is required. Students will be required to read, discuss and write short papers or worksheets and tour journals.
You will study art, architecture and museum collections to become more familiar with the broad sweep of German history and questions of identity. You will understand memory as a conscious political action and see how it is developed in contemporary Germany through the study of art, monuments, and place. You will learn about contemporary German culture and customs. We will prepare to become a group of respectful travellers. You will be able to critically and reflectively analyze your roles as tourists.
