Pi Sigma Alpha

*In attendance: Chapter Advisor (Dr. Fred Slocum); President (Melissa Andersen); Vice-President (Dave Sanchez); Secretary (Mary O’Connor); two active  

  members; two new members.

*Melissa Andersen distributed a chart, asking if Thursday at 5:00 p.m. is an ideal meeting time.

*Dr. Slocum informed new members of Pi Sigma Alpha’s membership requirements:

            ~3.0 GPA within major

            ~10 or more hours within major

            ~At least one class at the 300 or 400 level

            ~Proof from academic transcript

            ~One-time $30 initiation fee

*Melissa Andersen briefly discussed the Pi Sigma trip to Washington, D.C., requesting to hold a special meeting for people traveling to D.C.

*Dave Sanchez discussed new ideas for Pi Sigma Alpha:

            ~Election Night

-November 7th

-Election party, food, discuss and debate candidates, make predictions, enjoy company of fellow political science enthusiasts.

            ~Debates on/off campus

                        -Assist in sponsoring debates with our name and physical attendance and assistance,

*Dr. Slocum discussed the MnPSA (Minnesota Political Science Association) meeting

            ~Takes place Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Metropolitan State University, St. Paul

            ~Students can present papers/posters at the meeting

*Melissa Andersen spoke about and presented a rough draft of Pi Sigma Alpha’s monthly newsletter

            ~Re-cap of important ideas/events/meeting highlights

            ~Dave Sanchez and Mary O’Connor will assist in writing the newsletter

*Melissa Andersen presented volunteer ideas

            ~”Rake the Lawn” event

                        -Takes place through VINE

                        -Volunteer along with the Pre-Law Society

                        -Substantial volunteer opportunity

*Melissa Andersen reminded members that Dr. Slocum will be on Sabbatical this spring.  We may have an interim faculty advisor.  Dr. Slocum will always be accessible via e-mail.

*Dr. Slocum discussed the Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics.  In addition, the chapter can nominate one student member each year to receive a membership to the American Political Science Association (APSA), including one year's subscription to each of APSA's three journals.  Mary O’Connor received the APSA membership for the 06’-07’ academic year.

*Dr. Slocum informed members of scholarship opportunities for both undergrads and graduate students.

*Dr. Slocum spoke about Pi Sigma Alpha’s chapter activity grants. 

~We have received grants every year we have applied, amounting to six years! 

~We received $1,750 for the Political Science Undergraduate Research Conference hosted by MSU last spring.

~Grants can also be used for speakers, debates, and conventions in other cities.

*Next meeting is September 28th (Thursday) from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in Morris Hall 209
