Gerontology Club

Mission:

To bring together undergraduate and graduate students from different disciplines that have an interest in Gerontology. This will allow the students to serve the community through projects and by interacting with professionals that work with the elderly. In addition, it will allow students and faculty members to connect and share their interest in the aging population and to promote scholarship, professionalism, friendship, and services to older persons, and to recognize exemplary attainment in Gerontology/Aging studies and related fields.

Events:

Saturday February 16, 2008 the Gero Club and Sigma Phi Omega will be volunteering at Laurel's Edge in Mankato with activities.

On October 23, 2007, the Gerontology Club and Sigma Phi Omega had an information booth in the CSU.  The goal was to inform MSU students and faculty about the Gerontology Club, Sigma Phi Omega, and the Gerontology Minor, Master of Science program and certificate in Gerontology.  Below are photos from the event.

Sigma Phi Omega


What is Sigma Phi Omega?

Sigma Phi Omega (SPO), is the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology that was established in 1980 to recognize the excellence of those who study gerontology/aging.  www.aghe.org/site/aghewebsite/section.php

What is the purpose of Sigma Phi Omega?

Sigma Phi Omega seeks to promote scholarship, professionalism, friendship, and services to older adults, and to recognize exemplary attainment in gerontology/aging studies and related fields.

Who is eligible for membership?

Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring or minoring in gerontology/aging studies and related fields. Undergraduates must have a grade point average of at least 3.3, and graduate students must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 to be eligible for membership.  Faculty, alumni, professional, and honorary memberships are also available. 


Beta Mu Chapter (MSU, Mankato)

The local Beta Mu Chapter of SPO was established in 1994. Beta Mu has members consisting of students, faculty, and professionals. If you would like additional membership information or are interested in becoming a member of Beta Mu, contact Jim Tift (james.tift@mnsu.edu)
