Shirley came to MSU, Mankato in 1992. She is the Director of Continuing Education for the College of Allied Health and Nursing and Director of the Minnesota Area Geriatric Education Center-South. She received her B.S. in Social Work in 1985 and her M.S. in Sociology: Human Service Planning & Administration and Graduate Certificate of Study in Gerontology from Mankato State University. She has also taken some doctoral coursework from the University of Minnesota School of Social Work.

Shirley teaches as an adjunct for the Gerontology and Social Work programs. Her research interests are in aging and chronic illnesses, women and cancer and family caregiving. Shirley recently worked on an ONS Grant: Family Experience of Neutropenia with the Family Nursing Research Team; authored a curriculum on Career Caregiver Leadership Orientation and a curriculum on Assisted Living.
