Dr. Widner came to MSU, Mankato in the fall of 2001 as an assistant professor in the Psychology Department. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Maryland in Psychology. He later went on to pursue his M.S. from the University of Texas in Cognitive Psychology and then earned his Ph.D. from Texas A & M University in Experimental Psychology. He later did post-doctoral work at Georgia Tech. with an emphasis in Cognitive Aging and more post doctoral work at New York University in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Dr. Widner has an interest in researching effects of aging – cognitive performance, Alzheimer's Disease, and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). He also uses brain imaging in his research.
