Dr. Hagemeister will be attending a contributors’ reception at the meeting.

Social Work - Debra Gohagan in collaboration with Terhi-Salokannel-Stenburg of Stadia Polytechnic have developed an on-line learning package for students of Comparative Social Welfare, due to be used in the 2003-04 academic year in the US, UK and Finland.

Social Work - Robin R. Wingo’s , syllabus, course outline, and support materials for SOWK 255, “Global Response to Human Need,” has been accepted for publication as a chapter in the Council on Social Work Education’s Integrating Global Perspectives in Social Work Education. Materials submitted for inclusion reflect best practices for the inclusion and teaching of international content at the BSW, MSW, and doctoral levels of social work education.  Richard Wintersteen, emeriti faculty, is co-author.

Anthropology - A paper co-authored by Susan Schalge of the Department of Anthropology and Anne Lewinson of Berry College entitled "Two Sides of the Same Coin:  Office Workers and 'Swahili' Urbanites as Neighbors in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania" was presented at the African Studies Association Meeting, Boston, MA.

Anthropology - Susan Schalge organized and chaired a symposium entitled "Engendering Peace" at the American Anthropological Association meeting, November 19-23, Chicago. The session was highlighted by the central planning committee of the AAA as particularly interesting to media members covering the event. Schalge also presented a paper, "Gender and Violence in the Haven of Peace," as part of that same session.

Economics - Atrayee Ghosh Roy shared her Fortran Program for constructing Bootstrap Confidence interval for the Suits Index with Minnesota Department of Revenue and U.S. department of treasury, June, 2003. They intend to use bootstrap confidence intervals for the Suits Index, the method used in her paper, “Confidence Intervals for the Suits Index” published in the National Tax Journal, 2003, LV1, (with John E. Anderson and Paul Shoemaker), to measure the statistical significance of the effects of tax policies.

Political Science/Law Enforcement -Leah Rogne reported on her research on dementia care in assisted living at a staff in-service March 26 at Pioneer Cottages in Fergus Falls, where Dr. Rogne and Dr. Kathryn Elliott conducted research last summer.  Dr. Rogne also gave a brief presentation on the research to community members at an Alzheimer's Association fundraiser the next day in Fergus Falls.

Political Science/Law Enforcement - Tamara Tucker Wilkins presented, “Policing in a Diverse Society,” at the MSU Teaching Scholar Series, Nov. 3.

Political Science/Law Enforcement - This year’s annual Kessel Lecture titled, “Hate and Violence After 9/11,” was delivered on October 7 to a packed audience by Jack Levin, a sociology/ criminology professor and expert on hate and violence at Northeastern University in Boston. Dr. Levin has authored or co-authored 24 books, and has appeared on every major televised national news broadcast and talk show, including Oprah. Dr. Levin also made a presentation on serial murder in the Sociology department’s course, Social Deviance. Fred Slocum led the effort to secure Dr. Levin as Kessel Lecturer.

Psychology - In his lecture Friday, February 20 in the Ostrander Auditorium I/O Psychology guest lecturer, Dr. Frank Landy presented his talk titled, "Expert Witnesses: Weapons of Mass Distraction." Dr. Frank Landy described the role expert testimony plays in employment discrimination and human-factors litigation cases.

Diversity Workshop - The SBS College Climate Committee organized an evening of discussion and community building for SBS and the campus community on the topic of “Classroom Environment and Diversity,” February 9 in the CSU Ballroom. The committee prepared case studies for small and large group discussions and introduced featured speaker, Eddie Moore, Jr. The speaker was sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity and the Student Chapter of the NAACP in collaboration with the Colleges of Social and Behavioral Sciences; Education; Business; Graduate Studies and Research; Science, Engineering & Technology and Academic Affairs. Dinner was provided for SBS faculty by the College and a grant from the Cultural Diversity Program.

Kessel Peace Institute - On October 16 the Kessel Peace Institute sponsored a campus lecture by Kathy Kelly titled, "Witness to War, Witness to Peace." Kathy Kelly, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize is a founding member of Voices in the Wilderness (a campaign to end UN/US sanctions against Iraq). Ms. Kelly was in Iraq last month and prior to that, from October 2003 until April 2003, she joined Iraq Peace Team members in Baghdad where she and the team maintained a presence throughout the invasion and occupation.

Kessel Peace Institute - The Kessel Peace Institute sponsored a Nov. 24 lecture titled, “Aggression as Peace, Peace as Aggression: A Radical Approach to Peace,” presented by Dr. Robert W. Luyster, Director of Peace Education, Professor of Philosophy, University of Connecticut.

Kessel Peace Institute’s Annual Pathways to Peace Conference titled, “Economic Justice,” was held April 20 at MSU. SBS participation in the full day event included a welcome by Ermira Babumusta, Kessel Peace Institute Graduate Assistant, a presentation titled, “Economic Injustice of America’s Class System,” by Dr. Barbara Carson, and a presentation by Dr. Jacqueline Vieceli, titled, “Cost of Empire: Throwing Away our Future.”

Mankato & Beyond: SBS Lecture Series - Mehr "Jay" Shahidi (’74 Economics, Political Science), a Minnesota business owner and social justice activist, was the inaugural speaker for, " Mankato and Beyond: SBS Lecture Series," Nov. 19. The goal of the series is to recognize some of the impact SBS students have generated over the years. The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences frequently graduates students who move beyond the state and region to make their marks on the world. Dean Susan Coultrap-McQuin cited Shahidi’s student leadership, his involvement in the American Refugee Committee, United Nations Association, Population Connection, and Amnesty International and his success as a Twin Cities business owner as key factors in the selection of Shahidi to launch the series. Shahidi presented a morning public lecture titled, "Discovering the Wonders of Iranian Culture and Traditions," then presented “Corporate Social Responsibility,” as a luncheon talk, to the Mankato Rotary Club, and next presented, “Landmine Clearance in Afghanistan," to three afternoon SBS classes.

Moving Towards Respect - On the evening of Nov. 12, 2003, SBS co-sponsored, "Survivors' Stories: a Conversation with Sabinai Zimering, Henry, Oertelt, and Cor Suijk," a conversation among WWII and Holocaust survivors, moderated by Dr. Barry van Driel, education outreach coordinator for the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.  The program was part of “Moving Towards Respect,” a two-day workshop for 80 educators held in Faribault and at MSU. Clark Johnson (Social Studies) was a member of the team that secured funding for the project and helped organize the events.

September 11 Remembrance - The Kessel Peace Institute, directed by Barb Carson, organized a time for remembrance for victims of Sept. 11 nest to the MSU fountain. Dr. Jackie Vieceli opened and closed the remembrance with a song.

Anthropology - The session at the American anthropological Association organized by Susan Schalge on engendering Peace was highlighted by the American Anthropological Association executive board for a press release about especially relevant topics for today’s world.

Ethnic Studies - Yueh-Ting Lee was informed that the grant, “Stigma & Behavioral Health in Urban Employers from China & US,” was approved. Support is provided by the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the Fogarty International Center (FIC). Two million dollars will be hosted at the University of Chicago and shared by University of Chicago, MSU, Hong Kong Polytechnic, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Beijing Normal University. Dr. Lee is one of the co-PI’s and MSU will receive $111,900.

Geography - Donald Friend has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship to Germany for the 2004-2005 Academic Year. The Fulbright award is for research and lecturing in Residence at the Institut für Geographie, Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany.

Social Studies - The Social Studies program announces new scholarships to be offered to students who have achieved exemplary global, multicultural, civic and community service experience.  Students will be considered for the scholarships as part of the process of applying for admission to the program.  Donations from program alumni will fund the scholarships.

Social Work – In addition to pro bono consulting, Dr. Anderson now is a member of one of the Mankato United Way’s “Vision Councils”; Dr. Black-Hughes contributes volunteer time to the Open Door clinic which has led to two of our students doing their McNair grant research at that agency.

The McNair Grant has been funded for 4 years at $225,000 per year.

Truman & Reta Wood Scholarship Dinner - The 9th annual Truman & Reta Wood Scholarship Dinner was held October 4 at Old Main Village Amy Klobuchar, president of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association was keynote speaker. Wood Scholarship Winners, Heather Kaiser and Takehito Kamata, received their plaques and thanked the assembled guests.

Anthropology - Adjunct Professor and newly hired assistant professor for next year, Ron Schirmer reports: Authored 1 paper and co-authored 1 paper at the Midwest Conference, co-authored 2 papers for at the Plains Conference, co-authored 1 article for the Midcontinental Journal of Arch.,

Anthropology - The documentary being prepared by Winifred Mitchell and Patricia Choate will assist the women of San Pedro Martyr, Mexico D. F. in documenting their 30 struggle against injustice.  The women are compiling a book about their organizational efforts with the help of  anthropologists from the Autonomous University of Mexico and our video will be part of their history and public relations efforts.

Anthropology - Homecoming 2003 the Department of Anthropology's Dr. Richard Strachan, Director of the MSU EMuseum hosted an open house in the Trafton Science Center.

Ethnic Studies - On Feb 13 (Friday), Prof. H. Z. Yang, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Wuhan University of Technology in Central China, met with Dean Susan Coultrap-McQuin, discussing the possibility of the future student or faculty exchanges between two universities. Prof. Yang also met and talked with Ethnic Studies faculty and graduate students and gave a guest lecture on Chinese higher education and Chinese culture in the Multi-Cultural and Ethnic Experience class.

Geography - A grand opening was held October 4 for the new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) laboratory. The GIS lab is a "state of the science" computer mapping laboratory with industry standard equipment. The lab is an example of university/industry partnerships with funding for equipment and computer software from student tuition and fees, state and federal grant funding, alumni donations, as well as from donations and partnerships with industry.

Geography - Jiyeong Lee has passed the qualification training and exam to become an ESRI certified instructor. Dr. Lee is beginning the process to have Geography’s new GIS lab certified by ESRI as an official ESRI Learning Center. These industry sanctions will allow the Geography Department to offer industry sanctioned workshops to practitioners in the community.

History - Department hosted an initiation of the Mankato Lambda Beta Chapter of the history honorary Phi Alpha Theta Society on April 25.

History - During summer 2003, Melodie Andrews, produced three history books for children with Capstone Press. They include a biography of Sitting Bull, and studies of the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. She has completed over 30 books for Capstone in the past 3 years.

Political Science/ Law Enforcement -Jeffrey Bumgarner was a panelist at the Emergency Management Higher Education Conference sponsored by FEMA's Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, MD, June 7-9, 2005.

Political Science/Law Enforcement - Bill Lewinski and Bill Hudson and many others have created the "Center for the Study of Performance in Extreme Encounters." The purpose of this non-profit, university-based center is to conduct ground-breaking research that brings scientific insight, rigor and documentation to training, judgment and interactions of highly stressful, lethal force encounters.

Political Science/Law Enforcement - Tamara Tucker Wilkins co-led (with Nina LeNoir, MSU Theatre Dept) a January study abroad tour for 25 students to England and Iceland. In England the group toured London, Stratford, the Stonehenge, and Bath. In London, Law Enforcement students had the rare opportunity to participate in an extensive question and answer session with two Metropolitan Police officers. In Reykjavik, Iceland, students toured the city and visited the geothermal mineral waters of the Blue Lagoon. 

Political Science/Law Enforcement - Tamara Tucker Wilkins, Law Enforcement and Nancy Fitzsimmons, Social Work, received a   $150,000, United States Department of Justice grant for their project, “Law Enforcement Training to Stop Abuse and Sexual Assault of People with Disabilities.” The project partners MSU with the Committee against Domestic Abuse, Southern Minnesota Independent Living Enterprises and Services, Community Assistance for Refugees, and the Law Enforcement Resource Center. 

Political Science/Law Enforcement - Tom Inglot was invited to serve on the selection committee for the 2003-2004 American Marshall Memorial Fellows from Minnesota. The Marshall Memorial Fellowship, established by The German Marshall Fund of the United States enables young American policy and opinion leaders to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of societies, institutions, and peoples in Europe.

Sociology & Corrections - James Robertson was among some 50 people from the U.S. and the United Kingdom invited and funded by the Open Society Institute to participate in a symposium entitled “Prison Reform Revisited: The Unfinished Agenda,” held October 16-18 at Pace University Law School, White Plains, NY.

Sociology & Corrections - Kim Greer , Sociology and Corrections, has agreed to serve as Director of the Center for Applied Social Science. Dr. Greer has been active on the advisory board of the center and has organized several learn-by-doing projects for her students that have been funded by the center. She will be working with an active advisory board that recommended her appointment to Dean Coultrap-McQuin.

Sociology & Corrections - Leah Rogne was elected vice-chair of the board of the newly-formed Region 9 Development Inc., created to provide a nonprofit vehicle to help find new sources of funding for programs that benefit residents of Minnesota's Region 9.

Sociology and Corrections - Democracy Matters, advised by Dr. Leah Rogne, organized a Walk for Democracy to bring attention to a campaign for fair and clean elections, featuring a visit by Doris “Granny D” Haddock, a 94 year old activist who was given the key to the city by Mankato’s mayor for her years of commitment to civic engagement.

Sociology and Corrections - In the Department of Sociology and Corrections the Sociology Club sponsored a series of “Brown Bag” discussions concerning on-going research in the department.

Sociology and Corrections - The Department of Sociology and Corrections conducted a state-wide phone survey for the Center for Rural Policy and Development. Six graduate students and 3 undergraduate students were involved in this project.

URSI - David Laverny-Rafter was invited to provide reaction/feedback on a study of Minnesota housing needs sponsored by Minnesota Housing Finance Agency and League of Minnesota Cities, St. Paul, MN, February 16, 2004.

URSI - Graduate Planning and Management certificates have been approved by MnSCU. In order to better serve urban planning and management practitioners, URSI developed two new certificate programs which allow practitioners to receive certification credentials by taking key courses in the graduate planning and management degree programs.

URSI - Janet Cherrington-Cucore served on the Historic Homes Tour Committee that planned and held a tour of five historic homes in Mankato on April 24 as a fund-raising event for the Mankato YMCA.

URSI - Janet Cherrington-Cucore was invited by the MSU Faculty Emeriti to discuss her research on the history of Mankato and how she has incorporated it into her Intro to the City URSI 100 course, October 10, 2003.

URSI - Perry Wood and H. Roger Smith were appointed to the Campus Master Plan Committee. Dr. Wood was appointed a co-chair of the committee. 

URSI - Tony Filipovitch testified at the House Finance (March 1) and the Senate Higher Education (March 9) hearings on the applied doctorate degree for MnSCU institutions

URSI - Tony Filipovitch was the facilitator for the Mankato City Council annual retreat on April 19.

WALTER (Weather Analysis Laboratory for Teaching and Educational Resources) will be providing weather support and on-line curricula in an Educational Exploration of Nunavut when an international team of explorers lead by Will Steger and MSU Geography alum Aaron Doering undertake a 3,000 mile Artic Transect during December 2003 through May 2004. MSU was host to 4 members of the expedition during an August 2003 Technology for Teachers workshop.

WALTER was host to a Technology for Teachers Institute, August 11-14. Teachers and others attending the workshop, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, received software and training in both ESRI (for Geographic Information Systems) and SSESCO (for Weather Visualization Graphics). The US Coast Guard Academy also flew in personnel to attend the workshop and receive training in the visualization of weather graphics. Cecil Keen has been involved in the training of US Air Force personnel for the past two years. Dr. Keen and a MSU raduate student have flown to Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and 5 bases in the continental US, to train for the US Air Force.

Women’s Studies - In April, Maria Bevacqua conducted diversity training for new advocates at the Sexual Violence Resource Center of Blue Earth County and the Brown County Victim Services.

Women’s Studies - Kim Surkan was invited to serve on the advisory board of an Internet study of transgender subjects conducted by the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota. The study is titled, “Longitudinal Study of Stigma, Resilience, & Mental Health.”

SBS 2003 Homecoming Activities - The College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and the Social Work Department & Club hosted reunions in the MSU Homecoming Touchdown Tent October 4.

SBS Career Day was held January 28 at MSU. The event included 12 professional panels, 34 exhibitors, and numerous student participants. Thank you to Judy Olson-Passer and Advising “U” for organizing this very successful event.

SBS New Faculty Reception - A Teaching & Learning New Faculty reception was held prior to the September 17 College Conversation.

SBS Technology Classroom - SBS classes are utilizing the latest technology in the new SBS technology classroom. On September 10 SBS held an Open House to introduce faculty to the new technology and to thank ACC for collaborating on this project. Wayne Sharp provided a “how to” session for the group.
