Graduate assistantships are funded from several sources. Several financially compensated assistantships are available through the psychology department each year. Graduate assistants receive a stipend equal to 9 credit hours per semester. Non-Minnesota residents granted assistantships are eligible for in-state tuition and fees. Formal application for graduate assistantships should be made through the Graduate Office at the time of application to the program.
Since departmental assistantships are limited, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for a number of other assistantships which are also available elsewhere in the University. Assistantships are available in each of the academic departments and in residential life, student activities, financial aid, pre-major advising, International Student Office, Admissions, Women's Center, the Learning Center, the student union and other selected student affairs areas. Since assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis, applicants enhance the likelihood of receiving an assistantship by applying for several types. A list of available positions is available from the College of Graduate Studies Office.
Recently, the University has made available several grants/assistantships for minority students. These awards provide support for minority students for a two year period. Applicants who may qualify are urged to inquire and to indicate their interest at the time they submit their application to the program.
Graduate students are also eligible for other types of financial aid such as guaranteed student loans and state and federal work-study employment. Applicants should contact the Financial Aids Office for further information.
Please consult the current University catalog for the latest information on tuition and fees. Note: Tuition and fees are subject to change by the State University Board without advance notice.
Residents of neighboring states may qualify for in-state tuition and are encouraged to consult the College of Graduate Studies Bulletin and the Registrar's Office for additional information.
Since students are expected to participate in a variety of professional activities, additional expenses are incurred. Student membership in professional organizations, attendance at regional and national conferences, and the purchase of malpractice insurance and professional journals should be considered as a necessary educational expense. Costs vary among students according to interests, number of conferences attended, and types of accommodations and travel preferred. However, most students report budget about $1,000 per year for these activities.
