Admission Criteria & Prerequisites For Study in Clinical Psychology

students and teachers

Admission to the clinical program is competitive. Each year there are many more applicants than positions available. In order to select among the many applicants, the admissions committee focuses upon the following indicators of successful graduate study:

  1. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score
  2. Undergraduate grade point average (GPA)--overall GPA and psychology GPA are considered individually.
  3. Letters of reference--particularly from psychology faculty who can evaluate prior academic performance.
  4. Undergraduate coursework in the sciences.
  5. Previous human service and/or research experience.
  6. Evidence of accomplishment in other areas.

Although we may admit students with undergraduate psychology program deficiencies, we strongly encourage applicants to complete prerequisites prior to matriculation. Applicants to the program should have completed the following courses prior to beginning graduate study:

  • Basic Statistics
  • Biopsychology
  • History of Psychology
  • Child Psychology or Life Span Development
  • Personality Theories
  • Abnormal Psychology

Additionally, applicants should have attained competency in Algebra and have some familiarity with personal computers such as the Macintosh or IBM systems. Students may make up deficiencies in the summer before beginning their program and/or during the first quarter of their program. For the Minnesota State University, Mankato summer offerings, contact the Psychology Department.
