Program Information: The Criminal Justice Study Tour will be traveling to Europe over winter break. This year's tour is to London (England), Edinburgh (Scotland), and Dublin (Ireland). We will spend five nights, including New Year’s festivities, in London, three nights in Edinburgh, and four nights in Dublin. We will travel to these countries in order to observe and compare the differences in security, law enforcement, and the political structures, as well as these nations’ response to terrorism as compared to that of the United States. Special planned visits include the Tower of London, riding the London Eye, taking a "Jack the Ripper" walk around London, Clover Castle in Scotland, seeing the Book of Kells at Trinity College, and touring the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. Participants are provided lots of free time to explore, shop or whatever! We offer you an invitation to learn about other nations’ criminal justice systems and responses to terrorism, as well as experience more fun imaginable by visiting new places and meeting new people.

Program Information: The first half of Spring 2013 semester classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 to learn and prepare for the tour. Then, over spring break, we will travel to Germany as a class. For eleven days over spring break, we will visit Germany with stops in Munich, Nuremberg and Berlin. But this will be much more than a tour of beautiful sights and famous places. Each professor will apply their special expertise to help you develop an intellectual context for your travel experiences.

This program is open to all students. Students will register for a course in honors (HONR 401) or theater (THEA 492). Since this is a course fee students may be eligible to use financial aid.
Program Information: Join the Honors Program and Theatre Department for a journey across time and space in London and Paris. During Spring semester 2013, students will meet weekly (Tuesdays, 4-6 p.m.) to study to histories of the European capitals. We’ll look at the changing urban geographies as the cities changed over time, from pre-Roman settlements to the modern metropolises they are today. During our studies, we will dive into the art, theatre, politics, and culture of the cities and their people. When classes end, the students will travel to Europe to spend seven nights in each city. Our days will include custom tours and lectures by the faculty, visits to many of the major sites, three theatre events in each city, time for students to develop their research projects, and free time to explore the cities on your own.

The Department of Social Work has been involved with the Bristol International Credit Earning Program (BICEP) for over 10 years and is eager to offer this opportunity again! BICEP is two-week educational programme for students focusing on the United Kingdom’s social policies related to child and family welfare, criminal justice, law enforcement, and health/substance abuse. The intensive two-week programme includes seminars, agency site visits, and historical tours. NOTE: Concentrations will be offered when there are sufficient numbers of participants. If a Concentration or specialization group does not form, effort will be made to meet the individual learning need of students should they choose to participate in another study group.
For social work students, you must be in process of completing or have completed SOWK 412 before participating in this opportunity. Students from other departments or disciplines must participate in a social welfare tutorial through the Department of Social Work prior to travel. The programme fee (to be announced) includes accommodations at Goldney Hall at the University of Bristol, ground transportation as part of the programme, academic advising, lectures, site visits, cultural and leisure activities, and nearly two thirds of all meals. Participants are responsible for airfare, course credit, and any additional personal expenses.

Students will register for a course in social work (SOWK 485/585). Since this is a course fee students may be eligible to use financial aid.
Program Information: The Topics in Social Work course provides an opportunity for students at the Bachelors, Masters, post-Baccalaureate and post-Masters level to enroll in an academic course that focuses on a current topic in the field. This course is being offered for 1or 3 credits at the undergraduate and graduate levels OR continuing education credit. This specific Topics course will focus on School Social Work in Australia. For students unfamiliar with the field of school social work the course will provide an overview of school social work in the United States with the opportunity to compare and contrast the provision of school social work services in other countries. For the seasoned professional, this course will examine current practices in the United States and allow them to be compared and contrasted with school social work practice in Australia. Evidence-based practice, ethical decision-making and cultural responsiveness in the provision of school social work services will be emphasized.
This course has an emphasis on evidence- based school social work practice across cultures. This course includes on-site visits with school social workers, guided tours, and a participation in a regional school social work meeting. Some meals are included in cost of trip. If you will be enrolling in the course for credit (not CEUs), summer financial aid can be requested to assist with cost.

Program Requirements: Students must be accepted to the Social Work Program in order to participate in the Metropolia Exchange. All students must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. MSU students must enroll in at least 12 credits while in Finland.
Language/Culture Requirements: MSU Exchange Students are required to take a language/culture course. No previous foreign language experience is required, but is recommended to become familiar with at least a few useful words and phrases.
Helsinki and University Information: Helsinki is located in the southern part of Finland on the Gulf of Finland. The population of greater Helsinki is approximately 1,232,000. Due to it's location on the gulf of Finland, Helsinki is a very maritime city, and is sometimes called "The daughter of the Baltic." Helsinki's airport is a direct link with the rest of Europe, and people in Helsinki can also board ferries bound for Stockholm, Sweden and Talinn, Estonia.
Metropolia University is one of Finland's largest applied sciences polytechnics. About 9,200 attend Metropollia which was created in 1999 when eight smaller, more specific applied science institutes around Helsinki merged. Metropolia's academic calendar is similar to MSU's. The fall semester starts in late August and ends in mid-December. The spring semester begins in mid-January and ends in mid-May. MSU students attending Metropolia must obtain a residence permit.

Program Information: Join us for an exciting tour in South Africa. This course will focus on the numerous cultures within South Africa and specifically the Eastern Cape. The participating students would initially fly into Cape Town and arrive on the 23rd of July, spending two days learning about apartied and the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela by visiting Robben Island, Table Top Mountain, and South African museums. The participants will then travel down the cape, touring Tsitsikamma Forest and Addo Elephant Park, and arrive in Port Elizabeth on the 28th of July. During the week in Port Elizabeth, the participants will join Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University criminal justice students and faculty in morning courses. These courses will include the comparing and contrasting criminal justice policies of South Africa with the United States. The afternoons will be spent touring courts, prisons, and other criminal justice agencies. The evenings will be spent enjoying the culture of South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

Emphasis will be placed on the study of corrections, specifically restorative justice, which is used throughout South Africa.

Students will register for a course in social work (SOWK 447, 450, or 455). Since this is a course fee students may be eligible to use financial aid.
